Характеризуются почти полным отсутствием контраста [отношение толщин вертикальных и гориз. штрихов] между штрихами, одноширинным построением, вертикальной осью овалов [ось симметрии букв овальной формы], мощными прямоугольными засечками [засечка] без скруглений. Название связано с Египетским походом Наполеона Бонапарта (1799), в результате которого в Европе узнали о цивилизации Древнего Египта, а также с названием французского фрегата Egyptienne, захваченного англичанами в 1802 г. и приведенного в Лондон в качестве трофея.
